Cinco de Mayo is commonly mistaken for Mexico's Independence Day, yet it marks a completely different historical event. This day commemorates the remarkable victory of the Mexican army over French forces at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War. Despite being heavily outnumbered, the Mexican troops, deemed underdogs, triumphed in this significant 1862 clash. In contrast, Mexican Independence Day is celebrated on September 16, commemorating the nation's independence from Spain in 1810, which occurred roughly 50 years prior to the Battle of Puebla.
