On November 19, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln delivered the Gettysburg Address at the consecration of the National Cemetery at the site of the Gettysburg battle. The speech was 2 minutes long and summed up everything vital about democracy. It had to be short because Lincoln was in the middle of having smallpox. He was bedridden after the speech for 3 weeks.
